Craft Distilling Renaissance is happening all over the world. The South American Spirits (Virtual) Summit will consist of five each one hour long presentations on Pisco, Gin, Rum, Agave and Whiskey. The Summit will conclude with a panel discussion from participants on the challenges and reward of being a distiller in the region.

Pisco Moderator Ivy Mix Leyenda Brooklyn, NY Ivy Mix is Co-Owner of Leyenda, her pan-Latin cocktail bar in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, backed by her long-time mentor, Julie Reiner. Leyenda pays tribute to her years of living and bartending in Guatemala, as well as extensive travels throughout all of Latin America. Leyenda has won many awards and has been recognized as being one of the best bars in America by Eater, GQ, Thrillist and others. Her book Spirits of Latin America was published in Spring of 2020.
Pisco Speaker Romina Puente-Arnao Pisco Capurro Bay Area Romina Puente-Arnao is the fifth generation producer of the award winning Capurro Pisco and co-founder of The Craft Spirits Cooperative, based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Through the cooperative Puente-Arno helps producers of exceptional spirits find new routs to market and helps lead a team of passionate spirits specialists.
Pisco Speaker Juan Carlos Ortuzar Waqar Pisco Craft Distillery Tulahuen, Chile Juan is one of the owners Pisco Waqar. Pisco Waqar is produced in the Tulahuen distillery in northern Chile.

Gin Moderator Alejandro Conejero Fitzroy Spirits Santiago, Chile Alejandro Conejero is the founder of Fitzroy Spirits in Santiago, Chile and current President of the Chilean Association of Gin Distillers.
Gin Speaker Tato Giovannoni Bar Floreria Atlantico Buenos Aires, Argentina Tato is a bartender, entrepeneur and creator of Principe de los Apostoles Gin in Argentina. He also runs Floreria Atlantico in Buenos Aires, one of the best 50 bars of the world.

Rum 11-12 am PDT 2-3 pm CLT

An overview of rum styles including aguardiente, cachaça, and rums made from many different forms of cane sugar.  Obstacles to craft distilling, being that there are monopolies or state control in many countries. I know of about two other small distilleries here in Panamá, have seen some in Brasil, and know of one or two in other countries. Curious fact is sugar cane is grown in essentially every country in South America except Chile.

Agave Speaker Marco Suarez Aqara Agave Spirit Lima, Peru Marco Suarez was born in Caraz –Place of Agaves, in Quechua language–, in the Peruvian Andes. After a significant corporate life, he returned to Caraz to develop a postponed project: to set up an Agave Distillery at 7400 feet above sea level, at the foot of the snow-capped mountains.
Agave Speaker Carlos Enrique Cuarta  Bartender and Consultant Chicago, Il Carlos Enrique Cuarta is a native of Venezuela. He has now been a long time resident of Chicago. His enthusiasm for life, and his inexhaustible curiosity are an
example to many people he has touched in his career as one of Chicago’s finest bartenders. He has
tirelessly pushed the limits as a bartender for many spirit brands, private clients, and catering
companies. He is also a champion for Cocuy, Venezuela’s native agave spirit.
Agave Speaker Diego Mora Agave Spirit Ecuador Quito, Ecuador Diego Mora is the leader of AGAVE SPIRIT ECUADOR, a comprehensive project that has worked for the recovery of knowledge and enhancement of Agave culture in the equatorial inter-Andean valleys, and all its uses and derivatives, including agave spirits.

Whiskey Speaker Michael Kuryla Black Whiskey Lima, Peru Michael Kuryla is the owner of the black whiskey company in Lima, Peru. He is the distiller of Black Whiskey, made with peruvian blue corn which has grown for centuries in the peruvian Andes.
Whisky Speaker Lila Serenelli La Alazana Whisky Chubut, Argentina Lila Serenelli is Master Distiller at La Alazana Distillery in Chubut, Argentina where they produce the first craft single malt whisky in Argentina.
