Blending barrels to achieve a desired flavor profile is both an art and a science. This seminar aims to showcase how temperature, humidity, and other environmental factors influence the way a barrel of Whiskey matures and achieves a wide array of flavors. Through extensive data collection with dozens of data points, we will be able to showcase how varying temperatures and humidity levels impact the ABV, flavor, and yield of barrels that were filled with the same whiskey at the same time. By knowing how a barrel will change in one location in the rickhouse vs. another location in the rickhouse, or even in an entirely separate location, the Master Distiller or Master Blender can proactively influence the final blend, or even have a greater opportunity to sell distinctive single barrels. Having "more colors to paint with" allows for distinctive line extensions, product descriptions, and greater marketing opportunities for the growth of a brand. Ultimately, a Craft Distillers' whiskeys can showcase a broad and dynamic range of styles and flavors, even if they are only utilizing a single mashbill and method of distillation.
